- Colloids

Hespan:

Another synthetic colloid, also with a molecular weight of 70,000.  310 mOsm/L.  Given for the same reason as all the other colloids (get the hint?), but has some nifty benefits.  Its cheaper than the others, has a lower risk of allergic reactions than either Dextran or Albumin, and is even more potent than Dextran 70.  It can expand volume up to 150% for up to 36 hours.  The down side (besides the volume-related obvious) is that in can increase serum amylase, glucose, PT, and PTT, and it can decrease factor VIII.  A patient must have good renal function in order to eliminate it.
