There is an old saying that you can't go home again as things and people are often very different from the way they are remembered. But what is one to do when a trip home is required to proceed with ones life?

This is the dilemma facing Melanie (Reese Witherspoon), a rising fashion mogul who has just had the man of her dreams, (Patrick Dempsey); propose to her despite his mayoral mother's (Candice Bergen) misgivings. It seems that Melanie has a husband and a past she is eager to remove once and for all back home in Alabama, and travels home to get her stubborn, soon to be ex, husband (Josh Lucas), to sign the divorce papers once and for all.

In no time, Melanie is surrounded by her ex, her family, and her old friends and despite her best intentions, slowly starts to recall the good and bad times she used to have with them all and is torn between her desire for her new life and those annoying pangs of her past that seem determined to not go away.

While not a comedy nor a drama, "Sweet Home Alabama" mixes elements of both and presents viewers with a lightweight, yet at times enjoyable and predictable film. There was little doubt for me as to the fates of the main characters yet the charm of Witherspoon saved this film from being a forgettable formulaic romantic comedy and as such, makes it an ideal film for a relaxing afternoon at home.

The DVD featured a nice selection of deleted scenes with introductions by director Andy Tennant including scenes with a character who was mostly deleted from the final cut of the film, yet has a bearing on the films outcome if viewers are quick enough to piece the clues together.
