In the new direct to DVD release "Species III", the alien hybrid storyline
continues. Picking up with the conclusion of "Species II" the alien/human
hybrid Eve (Natasha Henstridge), has been wounded by soldiers and is on
her way via military transport back to a secret base.
Eve gives birth and before the military can contain the situation the
new offspring have vanished leaving only a dead Eve and soldiers as
well as many questions. A Dr. attached to the ambulance transporting
Eve, named Abbot (Robert Knepper), has taken one of the offspring,
and named her Sara (Sunny Mabrey), with the hopes that he can use her
to make a pure strain and harmless alien species.
Things seem to be going as planned until other offspring start to
arrive all with various health problems. It seems that Sara holds the
key to the survival of the alien species on Earth as she is
unhindered by any of the conditions that affect the others.
Before long, it is a race against time to protect Sara from the
offspring and the military as well as from herself as her desire to
mate has started to surface and all life on earth is threatened as a
result.
While the third chapter does not have the budget that the last two
films had, there are some good moments. Mabrey is solid as Sara and
shows that she is more than capable of taking over the franchise
should future chapters come. The film does drag in some spots and the
supporting work is not as effective as it was in the first two since
Michael Madsen, and Marg Helenberger are missing from this
installment as are any surviving characters from the previous two
films. While it may not work as a theatrical release, "Species III"
is an entertaining rental despite some flaws.
