One of the more original and entertaining films of recent years is now available on DVD. “School of Rock” stars Jack Black in a breakout role as Dewey Finn, an aspiring musician who is kicked out of his band weeks before the big Battle of the Bands competition. In a bout of desperation Dewey poses as his roommate and accepts a substitute teaching position at a posh private school. Naturally Dewey has no experience as a teacher and has no idea of what he has gotten himself into. Upon learning that many of his students are gifted musicians, Dewey forms the class into a band with hopes of winning the Battle of the Bands. Of course this activity is not sanctioned by the parents nor the school Principal (Joan Cusack), so Dewey and the class must practice in secret often with hilarious results. With time not on their side Dewey and the kids face a race against time to prepare for the big show.

The film has some good laughs and is a charming and entertaining film that will leave you laughing and cheering for more. Black shines in his breakout role, as he is a live wire who still maintains a sensitive side. It is easy to see why this film landed on many critics best of the year lists, as it is a rare gem that came in with few expectations and won over those who saw it. The film is a solid production, and the performance of Black firmly establishes him as a star on the rise. The DVD is chocked full of extras such as commentaries by Black and director Richard Linklater as well as some great Rock documentaries according to Dewey Finn including his classic pitch to Led Zepplin.
