"Not me," I can hear you saying.
"I've got a Concealed Pistol License issued by the State."
"That's all I need," you say, "I'm covered."

WRONG ANSWER!
The only thing a "concealed carry" permit does for you is to verify to local law enforcement you are NOT PROHIBITED from carrying concealed.
THAT IS ALL!

IT STATES NOWHERE
ON THE PERMIT
THAT YOU HAVE BEEN
PROPERLY TRAINED IN
THE LAWFUL USE OF
POTENTIALLY DEADLY FORCE.
IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO
OBTAIN THAT TRAINING!

Question number 21 on Washington State's
Criminal Justice Training Commission
"Armed Security Officer Written
examination" states the following:

"Your best defense against a civil suit
is knowledge of the law, good judgment
and adequate training with your
weapon and on use of force."

This may be the most important
statement on the entire exam.

This, of course applies to criminal actions also.

God help you if you have to shoot an attacker and didn't know EXACTLY what you were doing. Even if you are found "NOT GUILTY" by a criminal court, civil action against you is almost guaranteed. Ask O.J. Simpson. And a civil jury's verdict usually need not be unanimous. You had better be prepared to properly document your RECENT PROFESSIONAL INSTRUCTION OR RE- CERTIFICATION to stand a good chance with a civil jury.

Too many plantiff's attorneys (civil prosecutors) will hammer away at the fact that professional instruction was available and that YOU did not seek it. Therefore, they will claim that YOU are LIABLE because YOU did not know what you were doing and used bad judgment and shot their client:

  • too many times
  • in the wrong body part
  • with improper, inhumane ammunition, etc., etc., ad nauseum.
If you don't believe me, show THIS to ANY civil trial lawyer.

Let's face it. If you even MIGHT have a chance to use a firearm in self-defense, you simply must know when you CAN, and more importantly CANNOT use your weapon. An experienced instructor can not only educate you on the when and whys of self-defense, he or she can instruct you on equipment choices, correct tactics, gunhandling and marksmanship. And they can back you up in court, if need be.

LET'S PLAY 20 QUESTIONS:

Any competent instructor will be able to answer the following questions off the top of their head and will usually detail them in their classes.
If you can PROVE (document) that you KNEW ALL of the answers to these questions PRIOR to ANY use of force, you MAY NOT need further instruction.

  1. How do I know if I'm ready to carry a gun?
  2. What are the four basic rules of gunhandling safety?
  3. What are the three basic handgun stances?
  4. What is "disparity of force"?
  5. What is the "human startle reflex"?
  6. What three requirements must be met before I can use deadly force?
  7. What is the "escalation of force continuum" as it applies to me?
  8. What kind of holster is the best suited to my needs?
  9. Is a revolver, autoloader or shotgun best suited for my circumstances?
  10. What is the best ammunition for defense - hollowpoints, "hot loads" or ball?
  11. How do I justify this ammunition choice to a criminal or civil jury?
  12. How can I display my gun to "back-off" my attacker legally?
  13. What is the difference between assault, manslaughter, and murder?
  14. If I must shoot my attacker, where do I aim?
  15. When am I justified shooting a stranger in my home?
  16. If someone tries to steal my car, can I shoot them?
  17. Under what circumstances can I shoot in defense of someone else?
  18. When can I fire a "warning shot"?
  19. If I do shoot an attacker, how do I deal with the police?
  20. What are the physical and psychological after-effects of a lethal encounter?
