signal-to-noise ratio (SNR):
1. The ratio of the amplitude of the desired signal to the amplitude of noise signals at a given point in time.
2. Used by hackers in a generalization of its technical meaning. Signal refers to useful information conveyed by some communications
medium, and noise to anything else on that medium. A low ratio implies that the medium in question is not worth one's attention.
