Washington Nature Weekends
Champion Trees
Your Own Town or City

Washington Nature Weekends includes a November chapter on visiting Champion Trees on the Olympic Peninsula.  Here are some places to take a few hours and enjoy big trees in your own town or city, almost any time of the year.

According to Van Pelt, the largest concentration of champion trees, if you include introduced species too, is in Seattle, which can boast 540 of the state’s largest trees. Not even a close second place is Tacoma, with only 175 of the champions within its borders and the list goes down from there to Mount Vernon’s 17 record-holders.

The “top ten cities” with big trees in them are Seattle, Tacoma, Walla Walla, Puyallup, Spokane, Bellingham, Olympia, Vashon/Maury Island, Lakewood, and Mount Vernon.

An easy way to enjoy simply being in the midst of lots and lots of big trees is to go to one of the top 10 parks named by Van Pelt:

Seattle

  • Washington Park Arboretum
  • Volunteer Park
  • Carl S. English Gardens
  • University of Washington
Tacoma
  • Point Defiance Park
  • Wright Parks
Walla Walla
  • Pioneer Park
Spokane
  • USDA Forest Service Arboretum
  • Finch Arboretum
Olympic Peninsula
  • Olympic National Park
