Century Ballroom and Cafe —Seattle

Something is always going on at the Century. It is both a school and, several nights a week, a dance hall. Located close to Madison Street in the Capitol Hill area, (915 E. Pine) this is one of Seattle's hot dance venues, and it serves all ages. (Read about it on the "Great Floors" page.)
The Century offers East Coast Swing, Lindy Hop and Salsa for adults and teens, and tap. Instructors are Hallie Kuperman, owner of Century Ballroom, and Lovica Callisti. Kuperman is director for Swing Girls and has taught Swing and Lindy Hop for several years. Callisti is instructor for Savoy Swing Club and Swing Girls.

Described as "dance enthusiasts from all over the South Sound area, DanceArt is instructors Paul Hart and Cherie Ponder. Living Traditions —Seattle

These folks, Walter and Nancyanna Dill, are involved in a wide variety of dance forms, from something as familiar as waltz and cha-cha to the cajun two-step and some wild Lindy moves. Yet they don't have their own studio. Love to Dance Club--Olympia

Located in Olympia, this non-profit ballroom dance club has been teaching public dances for eight years, reports Dave Lynch, volunteer coordinator.
Location: Heritage Hall at the Thurston County Fairgrounds, 3054 Carpenter Road SW, Lacey.
Dances: Love to Dance Club hosts 10 dances a year supported with two-piece bands at community and fraternal clubs, catering to an age group that varies from 20-60. The dances are scheduled for the Third Saturday of the month, 8-12 p.m. Cost is $8 for non-members; those who have already paid the $50 year annual fee are admitted free.
The club also hosts free drop-in practices for the public on alternate Wednesdays 6-8 p.m.

(Everett) Mountaineers

There are Friday night dances here on an irregular schedule, co-sponsored by the Mountaineers and City of Everett. There is additional instruction on other days, reports Pat McMonagle, instructor. They are primarily international, North European couple dances and Balkan line dances. Activities start at 8 p.m. with a half-hour of instruction. There's no charge, but a $3-5 donation is welcomed. (Tacoma) Mountaineers

Located at 2302 N. 30th Street, the Tacoma Mountaineers enjoy use of a 40-70 vinyl dance floor with a room capacity of 175. Dues are $48 per year for a membership that allows use of Mountaineer facilities throughout the Puget Sound area. Among the dance events held at the facility are Tuesday night folk dancing. Savoy Swing Club

The Savoy Swing Club was founded in Seattle in 1993 to preserve and promote Savoy-style Lindy Hop, the orignal form of Swing dance that developed in Harlem during the late 1920's and 1930's. SSC is an incorporated, non-profit, volunteer-based social dance organization with more than 400 annual members. The club presents Lindy Hop to the community through performances and demonstrations, classes and workshops, special dance events, and a newsletter mailed to members. The club features a formal Performance Troupe which tours the Pacific Northwest performing Lindy Hop and 1930's jazz. The club's Demonstration Group (Emerald City Swing) also offers participative demonstrations and performances.

  1. Take I-5 south and exit onto Hwy 16 West.

Strictly Ballroom

The instructors go by their first names, Carmen and Dale. Carmen reports that she is a music and dance major who has been dancing since age 5, "professionally trained and highly experienced." She instructs in Waltz, Rumba, Hustle, Swing, Salsa, Cha-cha and Merengue and holds smoke/alcohol free dances (semi-formal and formal) at the Hayloft Dance Hall, 15320 35th Ave. W, Lynnwood. Swedish Cultural Center —Seattle

Located on Queen Anne Hill, downhill from Aurora and uphill from Westlake, the Swedish club features a "great dance floor and wonderful view of Lake Union. Tico Tico Dance Club

Tico Tico is one of the oldest dance clubs in the state. It offers 5 Saturday night dances a year to members for $75 or $25 per dance (couples or singles) at the Lakewood Elks Club, 6313 75th West, Tacoma, (253) 588-2388. (You don't have to be an Elk to attend.) The ballroom is 50x25 feet and holds 200. Dances offer live music from groups that provide "the full range of ballroom dance types," and run 7 p.m. to midnight. Admission includes a dessert served midway through the evening, and many guests bring potluck hors d'oeuvres ranging from dips to meat dishes. Dances range from formal to semi-informal.
