5 % Albumin:

Contains 50g/L of Albumin, 300 mOsm/L.  This is the same concentration of Albumin as that contained in normal blood plasma.  The advantage is in expanding intravascular volume while at the same time reducing interstitial and pulmonary edema.  Allows fluid resuscitation to be done with less volume and the results last longer than with crystalloid resuscitation.  More bang for more money.  I myself like it, but a lot of docs have personal [theoretical] hang-ups about using it.  Because the body sees it as "just as good" as it's own, there will be a  compensatory decrease in endogenous albumin production.  Also, if a patient has "capillary leak syndrome," administration can contribute to increased interstitial edema.
