About Chaos Bar & Grill

The #ChaosBar&Grill was originally thought of as a place to meet after CompuServe exceeded our tolerance for financial abuse. We, who left CB, needed a place to find each other. IRC and the undernet (where we are) have thousands of channels and tens of thousands of users. So we got together one evening in August, 1995, and agreed that #ChaosBar&Grill on the undernet would be the place.

As we started arriving, we found old friends and new. And we discovered that we were, once again, newbies. Mistakes were made, laughs were had, and we even learned to survive net-splits. And, like many new channels, we ended up in the occasional operator wars. An operator war occurs when one or more people grab a channel and prevent others from getting in. For those of you who don't know, the first one into a channel becomes its operator. There were times when many of us couldn't get into our meeting place because of accidents (mostly due to typos) and the occasional deliberate lock out.

To contend with this and to make life here enjoyable, the channel was officially sanctioned by the Undernet committees and the "W" bot was give to us to keep the channel alive. A side-effect of this was that someone had to be designated the channel operator. We then had a decision to make: how many operators would there be?

So after discussions, flames, death-threats, and some good suggestions, the idea is now to have people who are here often, and who are willing to help others enjoy this place, become operators. This is similar, but obviously not the same as CB helpers. However, abusing people or hacking IRC will NOT be tolerated and will be subject to removal from the list of operators, and if severe, being banned from the channel.

Chaos Bar & Grill Guidelines

  1. We're all here to have fun. Please remember that at times what is considered fun to some may not be to others. Constant topic changes, keyword scripts, and lots of /sound commands can become annoying after a while. Play is fun but remember to be considerate to others.

  2. Channel operators (ChanOps):

  3. If anyone is banned from #CB&G for a valid reason (see Operator Responsibilites) the first ban will be for 24 hours. If a second ban becomes neccessary it will last 72 hours. A third ban will be 120 hours and any ban subsequent to that is subject to lifting after a vote by the current ChanOps. Anyone banned will be e-mailed an explanation of the reason for the ban and the length of time placed on the ban.

    Operator Responsibilties
  1. The intent of operators on #ChaosBar&Grill is to help people enjoy their experience. That is the first priority. Operators should be helpful and diplomatic. We should not start or participate in flame wars or operator wars.

Please remind people, when this gets out of hand, that they can always take their arguments to a private discussion or temporary channel. Anyone can create a temporary channel using "/JOIN #sillyname".

  2. Don't use the /MODE command to change the settings of this channel. It is possible to lock everyone out by making the channel private or by putting a password on it. This is considered abuse. Note also that the Undernet committee frowns on this as well.

  3. Do not use the OP commands to give ops to any other users. The bot is set up to give ops to those on the current ops list.

  4. If it becomes neccessary to kick or ban any user from #CB&G please make sure you have logged what you can of the incident or can provide a valid reason that can then be forwarded to the individual in question.

  5. Whenever possible issue any commands neccessary as a ChanOP through the bot.

  6. Don't ban or kick the "W" bot from the channel. Doing so may cause you to be permanently banned from the undernet by the Undernet operators (not us) and may cause us to lose the "W" bot.

  7. From the Undernet Channel Service Committee FAQ: You are also responsible to ensure that none of your channel operators (including bots) are not running hack protection scripts (such as phoenix). You are also to ensure that none of your ops deop/kick/ban W. This is considered abuse and will be dealt with severly and can result in the removal of W from the channel. "Testing", such as seeing what will happen if W is deop'd, is considered abuse.

  8. From the Undernet Channel Service Committee FAQ: To find out what commands you have access to do a "/msg X showcommands #channel". It is also a good idea to have a password, just in case someone is using a hacked username and is able to replicate your user@host name.

We consider any operator using a hacked username to be abuse on this channel.

  9. The Undernet Channel Service Committee (CSC) can be contacted by sending mail to cservice@undernet.org or by dropping by #cservice and asking.
