Rhea (Wortman) Cardwell - Outside Hitter, University of Alaska Anchorage Anchorage Daily News adn.com
Senior Rhea [Wortman] Cardwell today became the first UAA volleyball player ever named an all-American when she was selected for the second team of the American Volleyball Coaches' Assocation Division II squad.
The 5-foot-10 outside hitter from Prineville, Ore., had one of the finest seasons ever for a Seawolf, ranking fourth in the nation in kills per set (4.48). She broke the school records for season kills per set, career kills per set (4.02) and most attacks in a season (1,457).
"This is such a great honor for Rhea and our entire program," said first-year Seawolf head coach Chris Green. "Her hitting numbers were obviously tremendous, but people should also remember that she played all-around great defense and was our primary passer as well. People tend to look at stat sheets and see kills, but her leadership was also a major part of our team's turnaround."
The Seawolves finished 15-14 and in sixth place in the nine-team GNAC after being picked last in the preseason coaches' poll. UAA had gone 5-19 in 2007.
Cardwell, who transferred to UAA from Clackamas (Ore.) Community College, was the first Seawolf in six years to earn all-Great Northwest Athletic Conference First Team honors. [Source Document]
