Peninsula's Chapman was named assistant coach of the Kitsap Pumas Soccer Club

Andrew Chapman

BREMERTON - Pirate head coach Andrew Chapman was named assistant coach of the Kitsap Pumas Soccer Club, a new professional soccer franchise that will play out of Kitsap County. Coach Chapman will continue his coaching and teaching duties at Peninsula. The Pumas’ season begins in the spring and runs into mid-summer. The Kitsap SC organization held a press conference Tuesday, Feb. 10 to announce the coaching staff, which includes head coach John Wedge and goalkeeper coach James Ritchie. "When you add the energy, enthusiasm and pedigrees of James and Andrew, we may end up with one of the best staffs in the league," said team owner Robin Waite. Wedge is a native of West Yorkshire, England, where he grew up playing and then coaching soccer. Peninsula athletic director Rick Ross noted that coach Chapman has worked hard to build the program at Peninsula and his reputation as a soccer coach is opening doors. "The contacts he's going to make and the coaching experience he's going to gain make this a very exciting opportunity for Andrew," Ross said. Since coming to Port Angeles, Chapman had received his National B license from the United States Soccer Federation, an outstanding achievement for soccer coaches in America. He also has his Advanced National Diploma and Director of Coaching Diploma from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. Chapman was named West Division and NWAACC soccer Coach of the Year in 2007 after his team won the West Division title and finished fourth in the NWAACC. Chapman was also named 2008 West Division coach of the year. In the past four years, Chapman has posted a 45-28-14 record and has been in the playoffs all four years with back-to-back Final Four appearances (2007 and 2008). Chapman has a Master’s of Science in Physical Education with emphasis in Pedagogy/Coaching and Sports Management/Administration from Eastern Washington University (2003). Chapman is also the physical education coordinator for Peninsula College.
