Statue of Pizarro in the Plaza Mayor

Statue of Pizarro -- maybe

An interesting story -- and it may be only that -- surrounds this statue of Pizarro. It seems that the sculptor (sorry, can't remember his name right now) wanted to honor Cortez, the conqueror of Mexico. So he made this statue, went to Mexico and offered it to the Mexican government. Now, as you can imagine, Cortez is not exactly an honored man in Mexico and the government there politely declined.

The sculptor ended somehow in Trujillo, where he offered a statue of Pizarro -- who came from that town -- to the town fathers. Honored and pleased, they accepted and placed the monument honoring their town's most famous citizen, in the Plaza Mayor.
