Star Trek Season 3 Review by Gareth Von Kallenbach

The third season set of the original Star Trek concludes the original televised run of legendary exploits of the Star Ship Enterprise under the command of Capt. James T. Kirk, (William Shatner), and the half human half Vulcan Spock (Leonard Nimoy), and ships doctor Leonard Mc Coy (Deforest Kelly), whose abrupt emotions belies his gracious Southern charm and brilliant skills.

The third season was plagued by severe cuts in budget and production time which resulted in some episodes such as “Spock’s Brain” that made fans groan but nevertheless provided solid entertainment.

Despite the restriction on the show, and the fact that the reduced budget required many shows to be confined aboard the ship or a single location, the third season of Star Trek does have some outstanding and very memorable shows. It can be argued that with the reduced budget, the cast had to carry the shows as costly fx were not as abundant as they were in previous years. This leads to deeper more emotional shows that broaden the relationships between the characters and provides many dramatic moments.

The set also contains the never aired original pilot “The Cage” as well as an introduction by the series creator Gene Roddenberry as well as the classic episodes “Day of the Dove”. “Spectre of the Gun” “The Tholian Web”, and “Let That be your Last Battlefield”.
