Lightspeed Ent, For Adults Only
Political intrigue abounds in the new film "Children of Dune" set to premiere March 16th on the Sci-Fi Channel. The film is a six-hour follow up to the successful mini series "Dune" which was based on the classic novel by Frank Hebert"
"Children" incorporates the 2nd and 3rd books in the Dune series as the second book named Messiah has been blended into the mix due to its brief length not being able to sustain a film longer than two hours. The plot involves the continuing exploits of Paul Atreides (Alec Newman) who has fulfilled his destiny from the first book and defeated the feuding houses as well as the Emperor and has installed himself as the new Emperor, aided by his army of fierce Desert Freemen, those who oppose him are quickly defeated or killed. Paul leads a troubled life, as there is a very complex web of deceit around him, as some of his followers have turned against him, as they are unhappy with the changed he has brought to their planet. As if this was not enough trouble, the daughter of the later Emperor Wensecia (Susan Sarandon), is plotting with her followers and the spacing guild to eliminate Paul and his family and return her family to power.
Into this mix, Paul and his concubine Chani (Barbara Kodetová), are finally able to conceive another child, to fill the void of the one that was killed in the last film, much to the dismay of his enemies who see this as a extension of his power and influence as they have plotted to keep Paul and Chani childless the past dozen years.
The plot then becomes even more complex as the loyalties, motivations, and desires of the characters is not always clear and there are some nice twists and turns along the way that I will save. It is not easy to cover a six-hour series, as the desire is always there to add more and more to cover all aspects of the plot. That being said, I decided in favor of a shorter review that was more of an overview, as I believe that a quality production such as this would be best served by little viewers experience it without a lot of knowledge. This is a fantastic and faithful adaptation of the classic books, and the FX and acting are even better than they were in the first film. Yes you can still at times tell which scenes were done in front of a blue or green screen, but the sheer scope and complexity of the plot makes "Children of Dune" must see TV and one of the most welcome programs this year and a true classic.
