We have had dachsies in our family since I was 6 months old. My first dog was a black & tan standard named “Candy”; she was a gift on my 7th birthday. Candy only lived to be 7 years old. Our next dachsie was Bunky the First. I got her in my junior year of high school. She was a black & tan mini, and she lived to be 17 years old!!! She was a very bright dog, and kind of put the seal on my Dachshund addiction. Boo came next, we adopted her when “Bunky I” was 14. It took awhile, but they eventually became best friends. After Bunky died, Boo was solo for about 3 years, then Mama adopted “Bunky II”, so named because she looks remarkably like her namesake. Which leads us to today!
Dachshunds are not for everyone. There truly are “dachsie people” in this world. To have a dachsie is to be owned by the dog. You become very well trained. You are never alone; even in the bathroom! They take a lot of care. We had ramps built on the deck, baby gates to keep them away from stairs, etc. They need to be kept lean; not an easy task (they are such beggars). In return; they give lots of love, devotion and entertainment too! Life is never dull if there’s a Dachshund in the house!
