June 16, 2001 - John, and Nan from Bellevue, Char from Seattle, Bruce from Emmett, Kathy from Bicknell, Prescott from Park City, Tim from Rigby and Paul and Eleanor all met at Kathy's, Friday the 15, in preparation for our Lake Powell houseboat trip. The Next morning we were up and away by 5:30 for the 2 1/2 hour drive to Bullfrog to pick up our Houseboat. From 8am until 9:30 there was a lot of frantic activity --- getting the boat, loading the boat, checking out, and launching our two 12 foot small boats. Shortly thereafter we headed out on a clear, warm, calm day. We lunched in Lake Canyon and motored on down to Iceberg Canyon. Kathy and Bruce scouted in the little boats and found a nice spot against a rubble wall in a cove with a big overhang. There was lots of swimming, jumping off rocks into the water and playing. John did a little (very little?) fishing and Char was the first person to try out the slide. Traveled about 22 miles.

June 17, 2001 - The next day we headed for the Escalante arm and again, Kathy and Bruce scouted and found a nice sandy beach at the very end of Willow Canyon and up Fortymile Creek. After some cooling off, we hiked up the creek. Some made it to the Broken Arrow Arch which they claimed was impressive. They also were very impressed with the lizard Kathy found under a bush until they figure out it was a fake. Bruce had to rush back to the boat to help Tim cook dinner, leaving the rest to march home on their own. We found some very nice petroglyphs on cliffs above the creek. Much of the time was spent in the water. Nan tried to make bubbles but her bubble formula must not have been right for the climate. Most days the temperature got into the mid 90's and the water was about 75 F. Traveled 17 miles.

Jun. 18, 2001 - From Willow we went into Davis Gulch and found a very nice beach under a big overhang. On the way in Admiral Paul let the crew off on one side of the LaGorce arch so they could walk thru it. The other side turned out to be at least a 20 ft cliff or drop into the water. That did not deter some of the crew who decided to jump in. Char and Bruce even found a higher place to jump from. They even drove back around in the little boat so they could jump in again. There were lots of people, picture taking, and jumping. Then Kathy and Bruce went to scout our campsite. The big overhang was a beautiful spot but there was a boat parked on the beach and some people sitting on the rocks when Kathy and Bruce drove by. Kathy asked, though, and they said they were not staying there, just visiting. After anchoring the boat, there was a squish-ball water fight, and even more jumping off the rocks. John showed us how to do cannon ball jumps. There was some water skiing and tubing behind the boat before dinner, and Kathy put on a fireworks program for us in the evening. Some of the adults may have overdone the jumping and were a little sore the next day. Traveled about 5 miles.

June 19, 2001 - The next day, June 19, Tuesday, we traveled about 29 miles back towards Bullfrog, and again Kathy and Bruce found a spot to park the houseboat at the very end of Lake Canyon. The boat travels at about 6.8 mph so we were on the water traveling quite a while. We even stopped in the middle of the lake for lunch and a quick swim. The boat had a slide at the back that shoots you into the water. Char gave a good anatomy lessons by drawing pictures of their organs on Prescott and Tim. At Lake Canyon we found some restored ruins and lots of Petroglyphs. Paul and the boys hiked up to the top of the mountain and called Jen on the cell phone. Kathy and John played the guitar and the rest of us harmonized after supper.

June 20, 2001 - The last day we cruised into Bullfrog about 11 am. Gassed up the boat, $2.80 per gallon, moved our stuff out, cleaned the boat and turned it in. It was quite hot but we did a little hike up the narrows behind the visitor's center before we headed back to Kathy's. Traveled 12 miles this day.

Different couples cooked supper and we ate very well. Everyone got to be Captain of the boat for a while. All except Paul and Eleanor slept on the top deck of the boat at night. We didn't see a cloud in the sky for 5 days and everyone stayed healthy and happy. Unfortunately we did very little fishing because we didn't have time. We had no houseboat problems. Occasionally we did have some problems keeping the holding tank from smelling. We traveled a total of 90 miles and used about 70 gallons of gas. Using his GPS, Paul was able to keep track of our location with an error of about 20 ft for most of the trip. We had two iceboxes and we even had some ice when we got back. It was a very good trip with an exceptionally fine crew. Thursday Paul and Eleanor, Tim and Prescott returned home and the rest stayed a while at Kathy's to play around Capital Reef Nat. Park and area. Because of the heat, they planned their hikes in the water. They hiked in the Salt Wash one day, near Factory Butte. Then the next day, Friday, they hiked down Sulpher Creek. Bruce and Char left on Saturday, and the weather changed drastically to sleet and rain. Nan and John headed back to Seattle, via Bryce and Zion National Parks. THE END
